| AEA Burong |
Dirk
Dijkstra & Rituel
|
| AEA was one of the first operations in Australia
to follow the European trend of Stud and Performance operations
working together – with the knowledge from the performance
side influencing the development of the breeding program. When Dirk
and Sicca Dijkstra arrived from Holland in 1983 they could see the
potential for the modern style of Warmblood horse, and their breeding
program has been steadily evolving, but always with one aim in mind,
to breed rideable horses that are capable of winning with the professional
– or providing the amateur with a horse that is enjoyable
AND competitive. |
|
In alliance with Weipke van der Lageweg, who is
rightly regarded as one of the world’s most successful breeders
of performance horses – AEA has brought together a bloodline
mix that combines the very finest of the Australian Thoroughbred
heritage and exceptional local jumping lines like Souvenir, with
the top Dutch and French lines, through Dutchman and Just de Pomme,
along with that dominant stallion on the dressage scene, Weltmeyer,
through his grand-son, Rituel.
At AEA the Dijskstra family – Dirk and Sicca, and showjumping
daughter, Stephanie – can provide you with a complete range
of breeding services. Services from their own stallions, or select
frozen semen from the famous van der Lageweg stallion band, choose
a foal from the stars on the ground, or talk about a more experienced
competition horse, ready to go. The team at AEA will happily advise
you on your selection of stallion, foal down your favourite brood
mare and send her home safely in foal – and with AEA you
are dealing with a team that believes that the place to prove
your breeding philosophy is in the competition arena… |

Sandro Hit
|
After searching tirelessly
throughout Europe in 2003 Andrew & Manuela McLean have imported
two young stallions from Germany and Holland, DaVinity and Alessandro.
Bought for their impeccable pedigrees, you no longer need to travel
to Europe to find bloodlines such as Donnerhall, Rubinstein, Caprimond,
World Cup & Sandro Hit.
Both stallions have sensational conformation and movement,
with temperaments to match. They are proving to be extremely trainable
and are gentlemen to handle.
|
DaVinity has three exceptional paces all showing
great strength for his future in dressage. By DaCaprio and out
of a Regazzoni mare, we can’t wait to watch him perform!
Alessandro was noticed by Andrew in Holland for his extraordinary
hind leg action. Bred by Paul Schockemöhle, he is the only
son of Sandro Hit in Australia. He has a very powerful, eye-catching
trot with awesome suspension.
We have done the homework for you. The quality of these two stallions
will certainly raise the bar in breeding Australian Dressage horses
of the future. |

Belcam Geldof.

|
|
Our stallion, Belcam Geldof
- ‘Bronson’ - has quickly formed a high-class reputation
for himself, not just in one discipline. The dressage circuit
recognizes him as an up and coming star of the future. He has
only competed one season and had a win elementary (one start)
and numerous places in novice. He also won two classes at the
Australian Championships at Werribee.
|
|
Justine Greer has carefully competed and trained
Bronson for 12 months now and will take him to the top level of
competition. His temperament – consistency – attitude
and ability to handle pressure, makes her job so much easier to
show him at his best.
His jumping career with Mark Nicholls has been above expectations
and he has also carved a high-class reputation around the circuit
as a star of the future. To win a championship in his first year
was exceptional. He loves to jump, is very careful and has shown
a lot of scope. As with the dressage, he is very well known to
be a very easy stallion to ride and handle. He has the ability
to do top level competition in any discipline with dressage, jumping
or eventing.
With his bloodlines, you mare will breed nothing but quality performance
horses with the right attitude and trainability. |

Horses |

|
|
Our aim is to produce horses suitable for any of the
Olympic disciplines, but particularly dressage, that are not only
beautiful with correct paces but possess an attitude that is trainable
and generous for both the competitive adult and junior rider.
Pictured right: Asbrook Park Meccano
|
| We believe there is a great need for quality horses
that have first and foremost generous and trainable dispositions
who can be educated, competed and overall enjoyed by riders who
are capable and dedicated but may not have the skills, time or
resources of the professional trainers. This we believe especially
applies to the juniors who require horses with talent and are
not too big or difficult for these younger and less experienced
cohort of riders. Upon moving to the Albury area our earlier success
was with the beautiful and versatile horses bred by Table Top
Arabians. These horses who were predominately partbred Arabians
were some of the most beautiful, talented and generous horses
anyone could want to work with. Over the years we have started
the careers of 10 Table Top horses who have all gone onto become
champion junior performance horses. Most of these horses were
only Galloways and therefore less versatile for the adult market
or older teenager. Thus we commenced breeding the next level up
- 15 to 16hh plus, by focusing on Anglo Arabians and Arabian Warmbloods.
Although the size has increased we are still striving to ensure
the other good qualities have not been lost.
We are a very small stud only breeding a couple of foals a year,
as we like to be able to give them lots of attention. Mostly we
do not part with our young horses until they are going under saddle
and have been out competing. We try and give them a very sound
education up to about novice level and jumping about 60 to 80cm.
As we are often placing horses with capable juniors it is our
belief that by starting our horses we can make a much better assessment
of “who” they are and what type of rider they will
suit. It is very important that they go to the right home not
just the one with the most money. Consequently we have a number
on long term lease with wonderful families.
When we were looking for a stallion we paid particular care to
choose a stallion that came from a strong riding background and
possessed a temperament to achieve our aims. Ashbrook Park Meccano,
an Arabian Warmblood who is by Richmeed Medallion (May Sherif)
and out of Deveron Antoinette (Deveron Durval) we believe fulfils
all we were seeking. Both Richmeed Medallion and Deveron Duval
progeny have proved themselves time and time again to be beautiful,
trainable and talented as is Meccano who competes very successfully
in the dressage arena This year he has commenced competing at
elementary level with a 2nd at his first start.
Up to date Meccano has been used exclusively over big Thoroughbred
mares and the results have been beautiful elegant foals that look
very much like Meccano. The oldest are only 18 months. He suits
us as we still wish to breed the occasional 15 to 16 hand prospect
to ensure we can supply our traditional market, but we believe
his greatest potential is to refine the large heavier warmbloods
and produce progeny that is light of foot, refined, generous of
nature and above all trainable for whatever discipline the riders
want to participate in.
We are situated just off the Hume Highway near the Ettamogah Pub.
We always enjoy meeting new horse enthusiasts and welcome anyone
who would like to stop off and view our horses. We also take horses
for training, and provide long and short term agistment.

Don Schufro
|
| The dressage breeders in
Denmark are amongst the most progressive and far-sighted in the
world, and at the famous Blue Hors Stud, they have gone to great
lengths to ensure that Germany’s very best bloodlines are
available for the Danish breeders – and thanks to Pernille
Hogg of Catago, frozen semen from that great stud is available
in Australia. |
| Heading the Blue Hors lineup is Don Schufro, who
just keeps on topping the German Dressage Stallion rankings! Don
Schufro is the classic cross of Donnerhall and Pik Bube, he has
proven himself a top class competitor himself, and a brilliant
sire – and he is not only famous in Germany he has some
very fine foals already on the ground in Australia.
Rubin Royal is regarded in Germany as the very best son of Rohdiamant,
and his full-brother, Romanov is looking just as good. Both stallions
were bred by that master breeder, Harli Seifert, and the strength
of her mare line compliments the brilliance of Rohdiamant. Romanov
was Vice-Champion of the Oldenburg licensing and he is a stallion
who will be enormously influential over the next decade.
Sandro Hit is all the rage, and of course, Blue Hors has found
a super son of Sandro Hit to joint the stallion band. Soprano
is out of a mare by the great stallion Contender and has his dad’s
elegance and spectacular movement.
Florestan is another stallion that the German breeders are flocking
to right now, and Future Cup has his sire Florestan’s presence
and quality – along with the legendary Florestan rideability.
His mare line is classic Westfalia – Disco-Star, a dressage
specialist, and the great Angelo.
Pernille is proud of the reputation that Catago has for friendly
service and great client care.

| Cloverfern |

APH Spiegel
|
| The 2003-4 breeding season
was again very busy at Cloverfern with almost all clients achieving
successful pregnancies with their mares both on and off stud.
GrandKavalier continues to be one of the most popular stallions
in Australia, producing offspring with superb temperaments, movement
and trainability. Some of his youngstock are now to be seen competing
successfully in the dressage arena, such as CF Grand Proposal,
Reuben Kavalier and CF Gemini. |
|
APH Spiegel was awarded his full AWHA license earlier
this year. Anyone who has Spiegel progeny can now upgrade their
registrations for a small fee.
Spiegel competed at the recent National Dressage Championships
with Sara Price and was a finalist in the Aachen Challenge. The
following week, he and Sara won the FEI championship at the Victorian
Young Rider Dressage Championships. A real tribute to his soundness
and temperament at 17 years.
The year, Cloverfern will also be standing Vicki Kendall-Hawke’s
successful FEI stallion, Rohirrim Tintagel Magic. Magic is well
known to competitors in NSW and will soon become equally well
known in Victoria, as he will be based here. Magic is by Wunder
out of a Kilof McOhl mare. He has a full license with the ACE
group. His progeny are very competitive in the dressage arena.
Magic is also a super jumper, having won three ODEs before specialising
in dressage. Cloverfern currently has a few weanlings, yearlings
and two-year-olds for sale. The two years olds are currently being
broken in, and will be ready for sale in a couple of months. Each
horse sold comes with a further free service to GrandKavalier
or Spiegel (subject to some simple conditions). We are always
happy to welcome visitors. |

| Danson Dressage |

Donnerblitz
|
|
Danson Dressage is very
excited about the young imported Donnerhall son Donnerblitz. Australian
breeders at last have the chance to take advantage of the blood
of the great Donnerhall – but this time from a stallion
that is as strong on the dam line as he is on the top line. |
Donnerblitz not only carries the blood of the most
famous dressage sire of them all – Donnerhall, but his dam
is by Landadel, the sire of international dressage horses (like
Gonnelien Rothenberger’s World Cup Finalist, Da Vinci) and
the sire of showjumping stars, like Landor S. Indeed, Landadel
is the only sire to produce finalists at both the World Cup Finals
– Dressage and Jumping – in the same year!
Recently started under saddle, Donnerblitz is just a natural and
will be campaigned as a young dressage horse aiming for DWTS 2004.
At Danson both Donnerblitz and Dusseldorf can be seen performing
in the sport they were bred for, proving that they are not just
breeding stallions.
Dusseldorf, sired by the Swedish stallion Du, has just begun his
Grand Prix career at 10 yrs of age. He has proven to be a consistent
performer from Novice through to Grand Prix at National level,
his unique temperament, trainability and movement are breeding
on in his beautiful progeny: Duchess and Duluxe are for sale.
Danson’s aim is to breed and produce serious dressage competition
horses that have the rideability as well as movement so everyone
can ride and enjoy them! ’Cause I certainly do!!

Pictured right: Briar - One of the World's Top Competitors |
|
This breeding season we have the pleasure of making
the following outstanding Dressage Stallions available (Frozen
Semen):
AMIRAL 764 ( Sire: Napoleon 625, Dam Sire: Flamingo 481)
The famous AMIRAL - one of the best breeding stallions in the
world - had the highest score ever given at the FLYINGE Stallion
Classifications. He was awarded a maximum 10 for Walk, Trot, Canter
and Temperament! Kyra Kyrklund rode him to one victory after another
and he became the highest ranked dressage stallion in the world
in 1995. Later he was also ranked the 3rd BEST BREEDING STALLION
IN THE WORLD with only Weyden and Donnerhall above him! AMIRAL’s
progeny are excelling in International Dressage as well as Showjumping
and Driving. Many of his offspring have been exported and are
successfully competing in Europe and the USA.
BRIAR 899 - NOTE: Privately owned stallion with special conditions.
(Sire: Magini 695, Dam: Charis 21695, Grand Sire: Krocket 651).
BRIAR is currently classed the best dressage stallion in the world!
Briar has not just proven his excellence on the International
competition scene with top placings and wins, including a Silver
and a Bronze medal at Hickstead 2003! He has also proven his ability
to pass on his talents year after year. Just to mention a few
of his offspring: two of his approved sons, Berlioz 978 and Biggles
1015, were Dressage winners in their respective Classifications.
Biggles also won: Best Young Dressage Stallion 2002. As a Type
10 Improvement Sire, Briar is used by many international breeders,
riders and trainers to refine and improve overall type ratings.
Kyra Kyrklund who trains Jan Brink and Briar says: “I would
give my soul for that horse – Briar.” Kyra has herself
bred a superb filly, Brittania by Briar, out of a Matador mare.
Brittania won the Fillies class in the UK and became Reserve Champion
overall. Briar is now in full preparation training for the Athens
Olympics and he certainly is in a very good position for a Medal.
D-DAY 935 ( Sire: Donnerschwee, Dam Sire: Welt As)
At the Stallion Classifications in Neustadt-Dosse, Germany 1996,
D-DAY was classed: The Best Dressage Stallion. He had as many
as 5 10’s in his protocol! Rideability and temperament both
scored 10, not to forget the value of a 10 for walk!
D-DAY is a stallion with a personality, charisma and an exceptionally
positive attitude that totally charms all. A wonderful horse in
every way, that also passes on his best to his offspring. D-DAY
has consistently produced top quality progeny in Germany, Holland
and Scandinavia.
By the way, Eric Lette - former FEI Dressage President and presently
Swedish National Dressage supervisor - has a very talented 7 year
old son, B-Day by D-DAY.
RAGAZZO 998 ( Sire: Raphael, Dam Sire: Pik Konig). Ragazzo - the
stallion that you cannot fault. Simply perfect! He had a superior
win at the 1994 Stallion Classifications at Neustadt-Dosse, Germany.
He is probably the only stallion that has had as many as 6 10’s!
Directly following his Classifications he spent 5 years breeding
- for over $ 2,000 000 - his offspring bringing very high prices.
Ragazzo sires both outstanding Dressage and Showjumping horses.
(His Showjumping score higher than most Showjumping stallions:
138!) Ragazzo is just so very consistent in producing top class
offspring with performance, temperament, exceedingly good movements
and the looks that are needed to be competitive on the very, very
tough international competition scene.
Ragazzo has so far had numerous wins up to Intermediaire I and
II. He is now educated up to Grand Prix. In 1996 he became: Champion
Of The Future at the National Stallion Championships in Germany.
Ragazzo - in mare terms he would have to be a true “Dish”
and he surely is a true Ragazzo (Boy in Italian)!
4ACES also offer breeders the legendary Riding Pony Stallion POWER
BOY RP 112.
POWER BOY has produced an overwhelming number of dressage offspring,
including Bundeschampionate winners! He also has sired many, many
winners of RP Showjumping, RP Eventing and RP Driving. In Power
Boy we have an absolute breeding and competition phantom. He even
beats big Warmbloods in competition time and time again! |

Don Dario Fo
© Nicole Emanuel
|
| Don Dario Fo was imported
from Germany in December 2000. He is a Licensed Oldenburg stallion,
born 21 May 1995. His sire, Don Gregory is the son of the great
Donnerhall, combined with the legendary ‘foundation’
sire, Grande. His dam, Firedance also has very strong Dressage
Bloodlines from her sire, Feiner Stern (a descendent of Furioso
II) and her dam, Adriana. |
Dario’s temperament is outstanding –
confirmed by his score of 10 for temperament in his 100-Day Test
at Neustadt in April 2000. Dario was placed 3rd out of 37 in the
Dressage Section and 7th out of 37 overall. He won the five-year-old
class at Lingen, Germany, in August 2000 at the International Dressage
Festival.
Dario’s competition activities are progressing to plan under
the training and riding of Manolo Mendez. The principle aim is to
build upon his German training and competition success, ensuring
his basics are very well established before moving to the next level.
We are particularly pleased with his progress, as well as the excellent
quality of his foals from both Thoroughbred and Warmblood mares.

Frambeau has it all...
He's got the looks, scope,
movement & breeding
|
| In August 2000, I went to
Germany to find myself a world class dressage horse. In retrospect,
I realise how naïve this concept was. However. Somehow, maybe
more through luck than good management, I managed to do just that.
In Frambeau I have a beautiful horse, one of the very few stallions
fully licensed and performance tested by the Hanoverian Verband
in Australia, with a great pedigree and movement. He’s even
a great colour – his name means raspberry. |
|
Next I purchased a beautiful foal with impeccable
breeding that showed vision and insight in to the future of the
modern dressage horse. Now a four-year-old with unequalled beauty,
lightness, elegance and power combined. Personality coupled with
rideability like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Rodrigo
is all and everything I ever imagined I would be lucky enough
to call my own. He is the future. |

| Hollingrove
Stud |

A Filly by Brentano
|
| After spending 16 enjoyable
years at Longwarry North, Hollingrove Stud will be moving
15 minutes further down the highway to our new larger property
- the beautiful and historic “Figuna Estate” in
Copelands Road, Warragul. The park-like property features
a 100 year old homestead in a magnificent garden setting,
which includes a 100 year old holly hedge. Originally the
property raised sheep and mules for export, but in latter
years has been used for cattle grazing. |
|
However, it was actually the large, softly
undulating paddocks, beautifully sheltered by established
treestands and the rich chocolate soil that we fell in love
with as we visualised mares and foals contentedly grazing
on the lush pastures. We are currently in the process of setting
up horse facilities that will compliment the beauty and charm
of “Figuna”.
This breeding season we have been fortunate to have 5 super
foals -3 frozen semen babies by Brentano 11, Rotspon and Weltmeyer,
as well as 2 fillies by the popular imported Hanoverian stallions
Prince Noir and Gymnastik Star. Huge interest in the stunning
Brentano 11 filly from the famous Faleten’s daughter
H.Fallon (x Don Ramiro) has resulted in her sale to Tasmania.
Congratulations to Diane Porteous on making us an offer that
we really could not refuse! We eagerly await Fallon’s
half sister H.Fantine’s (x Flemmingh) first foal by
Falsterbo later in the year. Our beautiful black Rotspon colt
from our Aachen mare H.Samoa did us proud by winning the Supreme
Champion Foal award at the recent ISSA Show with the massive
average score of 88%, which resulted in us winning the fabulous
prize of a frozen semen service to either Contucci or Parabol,
kindly donated by Hilltop Farms. Plans are to breed Samoa
back to Rotspon this year, as we would dearly love a filly
with Romeo’s looks movement and best of all- outstanding
temperament to continue her line. Using the proven cross of
Donnerhall/ Weltmeyer has worked well for us, with H.Chandon
breeding us a powerful big colt who looks and moves just like
his dad! Chandon’s 4 yo half sister H.Winona(x Wunder)
is doing exceptionally well for her new owner Julie Smout,
winning at both the AWHA and ISSA Shows and will shortly begin
her dressage career. It is very rewarding to see horses that
you have bred out competing successfully for their new owners,
and even more importantly bringing them pleasure and enjoyment
in their day to day lives, so that the “word of mouth”
recommendation is your greatest sales advertisement. |

| Holstein
Park & Paradise Stud |

Gerhard & Galauteus
|
|
Gerhard Quast from Holstein
Park, together with Ursula Lang have joined their breeding
programmes at Paradise Stud to make a big impact on Warmblood
breeding in Australia through further development and improvement
of bloodlines. |
|
Gerhard, aged 72 and not yet retired, believes
in always striving to improve the breeding to achieve the
best results: “More modern types with still more movement
and better temperament.” He also looks for jumping ability,
as he says, ‘if you have a horse that can do both dressage
and jumping, you are always in front.’
Gerhard’s breeding programme has included importing
four stallions from Germany: Monopol (1975), Falkland (1979),
Lander (1983) and Casanova (1998) and ensuring that he found
mares with the best breeding characteristics to create the
best match. The results have been excellent with 17 Grand
Prix dressage horses and a large number of A grade showjumpers.
Even last year, one mare bred by Gerhard was sold to America
for showjumping.
He says: “In Australia not many showjumping riders will
pay big money for a Warmblood, they would rather buy a number
of Thoroughbreds. But if you buy one horse that goes to the
top, that is what you want – think about it! This is
where the Europeans are in front – by breeding and riding
the best.”
Gerhard believes that, “we have too many breeders in
Australia who are breeding with any mare and/or stallion,
not giving due regard to quality, character and improvement
– this is wrong.” Gerhard’s advice to others
is to choose the best mares, even when using frozen semen.
He has seen many disasters with frozen semen. “People
are spending lots of money and do not achieve quality, they
need to ask the experienced breeders for advice and go for
the best – not just any mare.”
Ursula Lang began breeding performance horses in Germany half
way between Verden and Celle, strongly influenced by the philosophy
and strict selection process of the Hanoverian Verband. She
comments: “It took the Germans a couple of hundred years
to establish their breeds and to refine them to the standards
they have today. There is certainly no way to achieve the
same result by taking a dose of frozen semen and artificially
inseminating just any mare. If you listen carefully to the
established breeders, you will find out there is much more
to breeding, like finding the right match of mare and stallion
which is still the secret ingredient in successful breeding.”
Ursula’s first broodmare came from one of the highest
regarded breeding barns, and she is now breeding from her
daughter and grand-daughter. Ursula imported these two mares,
plus two other top quality broodmares, when she emigrated
from Germany in 1995. Then four and a half years ago, Ursula
bought the great stallion, Moselfischer, who came directly
from the Celle State Stud when he was imported in 1983. Ursula
believes strongly that Moselfischer is still a ‘modern
horse’ considering his dam, and the sire of the super-champion,
Stakkato, shares the same bloodlines. Moselfischer produces
top foals with the imported mares (it is like breeding in
Germany…)
Gerhard and Ursula are offering a wide range of opportunities
to the equestrian world: breeding and training quality competition
horses for the highest expectations, as well as using their
knowledge and experience to advise, educate and train riders
to the best international standards. |

| International
Horse Breeders |

Forsyth
|
| Glenis and Eil at IHB
(established 1989) always look forward with great anticipation
to the new stallions available through frozen AI each season.
The German State Stud Celle is always buying new young stallions
that have just completed their performance tests and show
great promise. They are also actively preparing other even
younger stallions for their on-coming 3 yo tests in Adelheidsdorf.
|
|
“So we study the bloodlines each year
as these new guys are offered to Australian breeders. There
is usually a mixture of bloodlines; horses by proven Celle
stallions, perhaps out of mares by Celle stallions, and some
by new bloodlines altogether. Breeding never stands still
and Celle is constantly using the best of the world’s
bloodlines for their own breeding programs. The aim is always
to breed better performance horses.”
“For 2004 Celle is offering a really lovely young stallion
called Re Primeur. He is by Rotspon out of a Wolkenstein 11mare
which means the German State Stud has consolidated two proven
bloodlines in this stallion. He came second in his year overall
in 2003 but first in the dressage phase where he excels: 9.67
for rideability and 9’s for trot, canter and walk. He
was awarded the best Hanoverian in his year. Also, due to
the great success of Brentano 11 progeny, Celle have introduced
another Bolero son, Bon Bonaparte, out of a Wendekreis mare
into their breeding program. This is again a combination of
two very successful breeding lines.”
“Wishing Luck is another new boy by the Thoroughbred
stallion Windhauch xx out of a Fabriano mare for those wishing
to add some ‘blood’ to their Warmblood breeding
program. Windhauch is one of the few German TB sires that
had success in advanced dressage and has 3 good basic gaits.
Another exciting young stallion carrying a new bloodline is
For Edition by Forsyth out of a Leggiero mare. Forsyth is
by For Pleasure by Furioso 11. For Edition was winner of his
performance test in 2003, placing 3rd in dressage and 2nd
in jumping, obviously a dual-discipline stallion of the highest
quality. He scored 9’s for rideability and walk and
10 for jumping technique, with a score of 147.8 overall.”
“IHB are also anticipating the arrival of Riverside
& Baroncelli from the Hengstation Pape stud for 2004.
Riverside is by Regazzoni out of a Donnerhall mare and Baroncelli
is by Bergamon out of a Matcho mare. Both these young stallions
are going excellently under saddle and we foresee some great
foals to come. From the Harli Seifert stable comes Rubin Royal
(Rohdiamant x Grundstein 11) plus three other very good jumping
sires, and from Holland the grey Rubels by Rafurstinels by
Rubinstein out of an Amethist mare.”
“Without doubt frozen AI has opened up opportunities
we would never have otherwise had here in this country. We
firmly believe that within three generations of breeding with
frozen AI it is possible to reach the sort of standard in
our mares that Europe now produces. That is, provided we choose
our mares carefully. The selection system is for a large part
geared to the stallion but it is left to the owners of the
mares to make the final selection. It is important therefore
not only to study the strengths and the weaknesses of the
stallion but to recognise that a great percentage of the genes
will come from the mare’s side.”
“We in Australia do not have the intense selection of
mares and their offspring which are the very base of the breeding
index for stallions in Europe. As far as stallions go, through
frozen AI we have the opportunity to select the stallions
that are the most successful in the world. Most likely the
easiest or most efficient way to bring our mares to European
standard is to use selected stallion crossings that have proven
themselves in the countries where the offspring is put under
great scrutiny.”
“The proof of the success of our breeding programs lies
in the performance of the youngsters. At Dressage and Jumping
With the Stars last December 2003, no less than 22 horses
competing were bred from some of our stallions through frozen
AI. Many of those horses received high awards and credit is
due to the people who have bred them, raised them as youngsters,
and those who have put in the necessary hours of basic training
to get them to this stage. Well done to you all.”
“IHB continues to supply the Australian market with
top sires with high breeding indexes and great fertility.
We look forward together with all breeders to improve the
quality of each new crop of foals upon the last.” |

Jaybee Alabaster
- The Star of 2003
|
| What a year… I
thought last year was as good as it got, boy was I wrong!
We had a good solid competition year with Jaybee Alabaster
probably the star. He performed very creditably at the Sydney
CDI, winning the 5 yo Young Horse Champion, and then went
on to win and place at both the NSW State Dressage Championships
and the National Dressage Championships 2003. Leuwin continued
to do his very best for me, achieving some very nice wins,
including the Supreme under saddle at the NSW AWHA Gala Day.
I felt like Isabel Werth cantering around the indoor at Horsley
Park, complete with rug and ribbons. |

The Queensland Young Horse Championships were
the debut for our two lovely Aachimedes fillies, Jaybee Amelia
ridden by Nicole Magoffin, and Jaybee Allegro ridden by Alex
Berns. They placed first and second in the 4 yo class, and
Jaybee Alfredo was 6 yo champion, very capably presented for
his Kiwi owner by Ben Conn.
Then it was the BIG one – Dressage with the Star at
Werribee. Jaybee Amelia was again beautifully presented by
Nicole. She has been so successful for me, winning 4 yo champion
in 2000 on Jaybee Accomplice, 2nd in the 4 yo in 2002 on Jaybee
April, and again 4 yo champion on Jaybee Amelia. She was second
into the final round, but guest rider Arjen Teeuwissen elevated
her to first. His comment on dismounting, ‘Wow’.
In the 5 yo we had our young imported stallion, Jaybee Alabaster
being ridden by Tor Van Der Berge. Tor has done a great job
on this horse since taking him over about Easter Time 2003.
Tor went out and rode him to the max. He led every round,
and Arjen’s comment when dismounting was ‘I have
one problem with this horse. He is in Australia, and not in
my stables.’ Rider’s mark 9.5.
In the 6 yo, and Ben was really getting a tune out of the
big bay Alfredo. Reiner Kramer was doing his usual very professional
job on Jaybee Amanda trying to improve on his second placing
of last year. Neither rider could be disappointed with their
placings – Jaybee Alfredo 2nd, Jaybee Amanda, 4th.
Jaybee Alabaster was awarded Champion of Champions. Sit down
Beverly and try and get your heart rate down a bit.
Then it hit me. This win comes with an entry for the World
Young Horse Championships at Verden. I turn to my husband,
‘we couldn’t do that.’ John said ‘why
not?’ Tor said ‘why not?’ So guess what
– we are going to give it a go.
Tor and the horse won again at the CDI in Sydney, then the
horse will be quarantined for 30 days, making him eligible
to fly to Germany early June. The competition is from 8th
to 11th July at Verden, and Tor and the horse are to work
with Ulf Möller of PSI in Hagen leading up to the competition.
Ulf was guest rider at DWTS in 2002, and we had a top three
finalist in all three age divisions. He really liked our horses
then, and was keen to work with Alabaster and Tor.
So, the magic carpet ride continues. Our horses are exceeding
our plans and hopes. You wouldn’t be dead for quids,
as my old Dad used to say. |

Llanavar Voltaire
|
| At Llanavar, we aim to produce our
young horses with your safety and pleasure in mind. Our main
markets are the mature and the Junior riders who are looking
for a horse ready to go out and enjoy. Each has as least a
year under saddle, so that they are through all that baby
confusion and their basic buttons firmly in place. They have
had their first competitions with focus on their behaviour
and attitude. They load and travel well and have been out
and are well behaved at both small and large competitions |
To supplement our own breeding program, and
meet demand, Llanavar has purchased some of the best young
horses from the most discerning breeders around Australia.
Carefully selected to meet our high standard for correct movement
and superb temperament these young horses contain some of
the best bloodlines available. These youngsters have been
prepared with the same attention to detail as our own home-bred
ones. I don’t feel it’s enough to breed horses
with good temperaments – I want to establish firm behavioural
patterns in that first year. We can’t do it cheaply,
but we do it well. |

Whisper - Australia's newest sensation!!!!!
|
| Why do we all breed and ride horses?
I think it’s because we want to have fun, and it brings
meaning to our lives. We enjoy the creative process in choosing
the right stallion for our mares and then choosing and training
our partner in the sport, shaping and contributing to the
horse. This principle of having fun guides our breeding program.
Our bottom line criteria is we all have horses to enjoy, I
will not make excuses for a horse. We have stallions I enjoy
riding, mares that are a pleasure to have around, and what
I enjoy the most is the training and riding at a high level
successfully. |
|
Our stallions are both proven to be successful
at international competition. Pzazz was really enthusiastically
received in Europe and all agreed he is a horse of international
calibre. What is more, he has always been produced by an amateur.
He has got everything – paces, temperament, trainability
and pzazz, that extra star quality. He is a pleasure every
day, and we can’t wait for his first foals.
Whisper was Reserve German champion at the Bundeschampionate,
Dutch champion, and now Australian champion. He wins friends
everywhere for his character, as well as his truly spectacular
movement and ability. And I can tell you, I had done nothing
that is more fun than riding him. His size and rideability
are breathtaking. His first foals in Europe are apparently
stunning.
We have frozen semen available all the time, and will make
chilled semen available from both stallions for a limited
time, depending on competitions, and Whisper’s recovery
from an injury to his foot, which occurred at the CDI and
will put him out of competition for an extended time.
Meanwhile we are enjoying watching our youngsters by Jet Set
D, Carbine, Rotspon and Aachimedes grow up, and waiting waiting
for foals by Pzazz and Whisper this spring – and we
are having fun training Whisper VI (aka Burrabong Blake) to
do the winning Pas de Deux at the Nationals with his friend,
Feurst and Sue Ogilvy – I thought you’d like the
picture. |

Donario
|
| The magic cross of Donnerhall and
Pik Bube continues to dominate German dressage breeding, and
in Donario we find that magic cross twice. Donario is by Don
Primero, arguably the most successful of all of the sons of
Donnerhall. His dam sire is less known outside Germany, but
Piaster is very well known in the south of Germany where he
stands. |
Bernd Eylers in his Selected Sires of Germany,
has this to say about Piaster: “Seldom before has a
stallion transmitted himself in such an exemplary manner in
Bavaria. Piaster has to date produced eight approved and much
sought after sonsą plus 27 state premium mares.”
Terry Ann and Stuart Drysdale bought Donario at the famous
PSI auction, primarily as a competition horse for Terry Ann,
and his amateur owner is happy to admit that she has probably
slowed down his competition career however in 2002 at the
National Dressage Championships Donario was third overall
in the Elementary Championships. He continues to perform
well and is now competing Advanced and qualified for the Sydney
2004 CDI.
Terry Ann and Stuart purchased a Sandro Hit mare in 2003,
and intend to start their own breeding program later this
year. The mare, Schwarze Sonne is by Sandro Hit who has been
a sensation in Germany, firstly as a competition horse –
winning at both the World Young Horse Championships and at
the Bundeschampionate – and is already the sire of Bundeschampionate
champions like Show Hit and Poetin. Poetin recently sold at
auction for 2.4 million euros! Schwarze Sonne after only two
outings has won at Novice with a percentage of 68/69%. The
future looks extremely exciting for the Drysdale’s breeding
program. |

Horses |

|
| Why do so many riders waste their
most valuable asset, their time, training horses with a low
probability of success?
It is possible that many years of correct dressage training
can turn a poor quality horse into an acceptable dressage
competitor. But those who start with good quality unspoilt
young horse have a much greater chance of success. With those
same years of correct training you can make a quality horse
into a champion. |
At Paladin Performance Horses our aim is to produce
quality young warmbloods that in the right hands, with skilled
training and dedication, would be at home in any arena in the
world. To this end, it is with great care that we select both
our mare and stallion bloodlines to produce quality foals. Foals
which are born to mares who have been carefully and correctly
fed throughout their pregnancy, and then throughout their lactation.
Foals with great temperaments and trainability, who are allowed
plenty of time to develop naturally, both physically and mentally
before they are required to accept the demands of being ridden
and worked.
It is to the end result of producing champion horses that our
whole breeding program is geared. |

| Ponderosa Stud stands the AWHA stallion
‘Lontano’. His progeny are showing their true
attributes of having a great temperament & athleticism,
which has allowed them to perform in a variety of equine disciplines.
They are being able to be ridden by FEI competitors and more
importantly the amateur riders who aspire to be great riders,
which a lot of us fall into this category. |
For the serious breeders, ‘Lontano’
has produced, in his second crop of foals, an ‘Approved’
AWHA Stallion known as ‘Lonarto’. ‘Lonarto’
has followed in his Sire’s footsteps with taking out Champion
of Champions, ‘Supreme Led Exhibit of all Breeds’
at the Morphettvale All Breeds Show; won ‘The Main Event’
Versatility Award – ‘The Bryce Nichol Perpetual
Award’ 2003 Led Stallion of the Year, as well as commencing
his Showjumping Career. Silvia Hausermann, an amateur rider
in SA, has shown that ‘Lontano’s progeny are very
versatile by competing with her 17.1hh gelding ‘Lot’s
of Wishes’ in the ‘Stockman’s Challenge’
for Western riders, & showing how it is done by placing
and beating many good Quarter horses. Silvia has now started
to compete as an Event Rider for the first time with ‘Lot’s
of Wishes’ & has been competing with success. Megan
Jones’s (FEI event rider & instructor) pupil, Ryan,
has a grey gelding ‘MEC Limerick’ another 17hh who
will be out competing in eventing and one to look out for, as
well as the talented SA young event rider of the year, Cammy
O’Rourke, has a yearling & a 3 year old. As a 5 year
old, ‘Janiels Domain’ has been sold overseas to
Hong Kong as a competition horse. ‘Dark & Stormy’
owned & ridden by Jo Cullen from SA has had a lot of success
in the Dressage Arena, the latest being the winner of the SA
6 year old Young Dressage Horse Competition and Novice Champion
scoring over 70%. Fay Hatch FEI Dressage rider in NT with ‘PS
Loftin’ won Champion Rider within 2 weeks of owning him
& continues to win in the Dressage arena in NT.
Many foals have won State Champion foal classes & quite
a few under saddle have won Champion Hack. Ponderosa Stud is
focussed to breed international quality every year. As ‘Lontano’s
progeny get older & more are out competing, the best is
yet to come! |

|
| Suddenly with the success of Briar,
the focus is on Swedish Warmblood breeding, and with Magritte
780, we have the very best of Swedish bloodlines – he
is by Magini, who is the sire of Briar, who won a silver medal
at the 2003 European Dressage Championships beating Relevant
into third. Magritte himself qualified for the European Championships
with a 3rd place last year in the Australian Dressage championships,
becoming my second Swedish stallion to do so. |
| Magritte has a unique ability to Piaffe and Passage,
showing a high degree of activity behind and fantastic elevation
in front. He passes on his athletic abilities to his offspring
and also his outstanding temperament. Magritte is truly an international
competitor and was the most successful FEI horse in Sweden in
1996. It is a very exciting prospect, in that he is available
to Australian breeders with chilled semen and a live foal guarantee.
His semen has a high motility and is consistently around 75%,
ensuring that the mares have every chance to get in foal first
time. |
