Great Stallions of the World

Burggraaf

Text and photos - Jacob Melissen

In his first season as a breeding stallion, Burggraaf covered only 40 mares, but from that year, two foals went on to become international showjumpers, under the Austrian rider, Thomas Fr¸hmann and Holland¹s Roelof Bril.

Roelof Bril was also the rider who started Burggraaf in national and international competitions. The pair cleared the puissance wall at Indoor Brabant at a height of 2.10 metres!

According to Bril: "Burggraaf is a great horse to ride, and he knows what it is to work. The fine character he has in the sport, he passes on to his children, and that gives him the possibility to grow and become one of the important Dutch stallions."

At the moment, Burggraaf is sire of four licensed stallions - Graf Grande and Habsburg in the Netherlands, Fellini in Belgium and Gentleman in Germany.

Burggraaf was sent away during the KWPN stallion test at Ermelo, in very controversial circumstances.

The laboratory found that Landgraf 1 could not be the father of Burggraaf. But a few weeks later, it became very clear that Landgraf was in fact the sire (apparently the Holstein Verband had made an error in the recording of their leading sire's blood type!) and the young stallion was back into the 100 day test.

He was successful in that test and received 8.5 points for his jumping and 9 for his character (on a scale of 1 to 10).

In 1995, his jumping index in the Breeding Value of Stallions, was eighth, but with the highest Reliability percentage, and he will no doubt climb further to the top.

Currently on of the most successful crosses on the European showjumping scene is Landgraf 1 x Cor de la BryËre. Landgraf is sire of 50 licensed stallions and has a total winning amount for his offspring of over DM3,500,000. Taggi, third at the World Equestrian Games in 1994 with S–ren von R–nne , is by Landgraf. Cor de la BryËre is also doing well. His offspring have won over DM2,000,000 - and he is also the sire of over 40 licensed stallions.
