Courville was a very moderate British racehorse and sold to the
Dutch breeder,
J.
Heringa, for £500 and commenced his stud career in 1966.
Although
Dutch riders were only just getting used to horses with a lot
of Thoroughbred blood at the time, Courville produced some international
stars – like Jasper, who as Little One, carried Hugo Simon
to victory at the Hamburg Derby. Jasper was banished from Holland
when his first (1974) crop of foals was considered disappointing,
but after further jumping successes, he was returned to Holland
in 1981 siring top jumpers – Nasper (Henk Nooren), Jasper
(Paul Weier, Walter Gabathuler), Neuvienne Valmonte (Tom Olsmeyer)
and Jasper S (Rene Sikkens). His son Avontuur, had a successful
jumping career with Jean Claude Vangeenberge before going to stud.
Jasper’s son, Jasper Z sired George Lindeman’s Jupiter.
Another Courville son, Notaris sired Linda Southern’s Chrysler
Kracker Jack, Wout-Jan van der Schans’ Aubada, and Gerrit
Veeneman’s Amadeus V.
Renville, by Courville, failed his licensing in Holland, went
to Belgium, before being returned to Holland in 1985 to be ridden
with success by Bert Romp.
As a broodmare sire, Courville was influential – Opstalans
Pasquino (Bert Romp), Fatal Attraction (Johan Heins), Opal (Christine
Stückelberger), Optiebeurs Decision (Emile Hendrix) and Zalmé
(Manuel Torres), are all out of Courville mares.
