He was the hero of the 2006 WEG – the giant grey Holsteiner that not only carried his rider, Jos Lansink to a world title, but also gave the other three riders in the jumpoff, all of them ladies, a lovely ride each time.
Although he is owned and stands in Holland, Cumano is essence of Holsteiner – and once again, demonstrates the crucial influence of the Thoroughbred in the emergence of the modern Holsteiner.
He carries two crosses of Marlon, two of Rantzau, one of Ladykiller, three of Cottage Son, one of Manometer and one of Anbick. Pretty well all the Thoroughbred stars in the Holstein galaxy.
Cumano is by Cassini I by showjumping sire Capitol I, who was once again ranked in the top ten of the world’s best sires of showjumpers in 2004.
Cassini’s dam Wisma also produced three full-siblings to Cassini I, namely the licensed stallion, Cassini II, the advanced level showjumper Cassini 3, and Donatha II, who later gave birth to the successful intermediate level showjumper Lovari (by Lasino I). Wisma’s daughter Mira (by Lansing) is the dam of licensed stallion Cassaro.
Wisma’s sire is Holstein Stallion Licensing champion, Caletto II, who unfortunately had a fatal accident after only four seasons at stud. The Caletto II sired Classic Touch, who was ridden by Ludger Beerbaum, won gold at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Mahmud adds the valuable upgrader Thoroughbred blood of Marlon xx to Cassini I’s pedigree. This dam line produced the stallions Caleri, Cassaro and Lovari.
Cassini I was a successful showjumping competitor with Denmark’s Bo Kristoffersen - as a nine-year-old Cassini I was part of the Danish Nations Cup team in Helsiniki, and participated in the European Championship in Mannheim. Franke Sloothaak took over the ride, and again achieved success in World Cup qualifiers and Nations Cups.
Cassini I is the sire of nine state premium mares and 14 licensed stallions in a number of breeding regions. His son Candillo won the 1996 stallion performance test in Medingen and is a successful international showjumper. He had two representatives at the Athens Games, Cumano, with Jos Lansink, and Isolvas Olympic with Steve Guerdat. The licensed stallion Hofgut Liederbach’s Ingmar has competed successfully with Achaz von Buchwaldt, and later with Pia-Luise Aufrecht. The pair won, amongst other events, the Mannheim Grand Prix in 2003. Eurocommerce Berlin is a star for The Netherlands, with Wim Schröder and was a member of the gold medal winning team at the Aachen WEG.
Cumano’s dam, Chanel II is by that pillar of Holstein breeding, Landgraf out of a mare by the Cor de la Bryère son, Caletto II – as with Cassini, Chanel II has the Thoroughbred Marlon on the dam line.
Cumano has concentrated on a competition rather than breeding career with Jos Lansink, covering only 50 mares in 2005. Aside from being the most successful horse at the Aachen WEG, in 2005 he was second in the five star Grand Prix at Valkenswaard, and third at the Aachen CHIO. In 2004 he was the victor in the International Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows.
In a recent article by Helga Eppler in Breeding News (October 2006), Jos Lansink is quoted as saying:
“The stallion has all the qualities we need for an international championship and what only a few horses have. After my adductor muscle injury last January, I couldn’t jump for a while, so I schooled Cavalor Cumano much in dressage. It was worthwhile. The horse is now fantastic to ride, and he proved how easy when the three ladies rode him in the World Equestrian Games final.”
Even Princess Haya wanted to hop on him for a ride…
