Drosselklang II and Dynamo.
Don Carlos’ sire Dominik was particularly long-lived
however this may not have been considered such a blessing
by the riders since his progeny sometimes lacked character
and willingness to perform. Even his best son Don Carlos could
be stubborn at times. At the 1964 Stallion Market, Don Carlos
was ranked last of the Celle lot, with the cheapest sales
price. This proved to be a mistake, as even though his progeny
took some riding they rewarded the effort with outstanding
performances.
Dominik's sire, Dömitz was the sire of Fidelitas, ridden
by Hans Günter Winkler in the gold medal winning German
jumping team at the Tokyo Olympics.
Don Carlos was stationed in Großenwörden from 1966
to 1981. His most renowned offspring in the showjumping sport
was the Verden auction horse Diavolo/Peter Schmitz. Other
progeny like Daniela/Klaus Reinacher or Day Dream/Thomas Bartels
however also caused a stir. Don Carlos’ crop produced
the two approved sons Don Camillo and Donkosak.
Don Camillo covered in the Hamburg region, where he sired
the dam of the grey stallion Ile de Bourbon. Donkosak on the
other hand, initially stood at Georg Vorwerk’s studfarm
in Cappeln/Oldenburg, where he produced outstanding showjumping
horses, before going on to an international competition career.
He was later stationed in the south of Germany.
The black horse Dorian was out of a Domspatz dam, making him
closely inbred to Dömitz I. He began his stud career
at the Bramlage studfarm in Dinklage-Bünne, then had
a successful competition career in the Austrian showjumping
team before finally returning to Bünne at an advanced
age. Many of Dorian’s progeny were ridden by top riders.
The Don Carlos’ sons Dynamo and Don Juan became synonyms
for showjumping performance. Dynamo sired classy horses such
as Dollar Girl (Thomas Fuchs - Switzerland) and Donna Carara
(Dietmar Gugler).
Don Juan, a full brother of Marion Henkel’s successful
horse Dixato, established himself as a sire of note thanks
firstly to the auction horse Genesis, a star with Britain’s
Tina Cassan. Other notable progeny include Dulf (ridden by
two top riders: Lesley McNaught and Jos Lansink) and Delon
VA ridden by Lars Nieberg.
His stallion sons include Doyen, Dirano, Donizetti and Don
Eduardo.
Two promising Don Carlos sons Drosselklang I and II were born
using Don Carlos frozen semen. Drosselklang I stood in Oberndorf
for a number of years, before being sold to South Africa as
a sire. Drosselklang
II produced international showjumping stars like Donnerlittchen
(Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum), Drossel-Matze (Erik Bigler),
Skyboy (Rodrigo Pessoa) and Frechdachs (Otto Becker). The
jumping Drosselklang II progeny regularly attain top prices
at the Verden auctions. Nine Drosselklang sons have thus far
been approved.
