Rebus is a Latvian stallion by the Thoroughbred, Referat xx. Referat was himself a successful eventer and said to possess a very powerful jump. Referat’s sire, Faktotum was imported from Germany as a sire of racehorses, but while he had some good gallopers, he was more influential as a sire of Russian Trakehners. Faktotum was the sire of the Grand Prix dressage horse, Tarif xx, who – ridden by Ivan Kalita – placed fifth individually at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, and were members of the Gold medal winning team.
Faktotum's dam, Fruhlingsonne is out of Fruhling Sfee by Dark Ronald, while on his top line, Harlekin is a grandson of Asterus, by Teddy (out of a Bay Ronald mare).

Referat is out of the Thoroughbred mare, Regata, who is by another German stallion, Raufbold xx who is by Oleander another grand son of Dark Ronald. Raufbold was the sire of Rubilnik xx, an infuential sire of Budyonny horses in Russia.
Rebus’ dam is Kratse, a Latvian Warmblood, a breed which is similar to the Hanoverian, but heavier. She is by the German Hanoverian stallion, Flagmanis (Feierabend – Fugung x Frühsport) and on her dam line, descends from the Oldenburg sire, Rheinwald.

Rebus' claim to international fame comes through his son, the dressage star, Rusty...
