International Animal Health introduces “Sootha”™

January 16th, 2012 at 4:08 am

‘He dug holes in his stable, chewed the door to pieces, killed any rug in teeth range, had a go at the fillies, walked fences all day, fiddled with his feed, and as for working him, forget it! But he’s a changed horse now!’

There’s never been a product quite like Sootha™ for treating stress in horses. It’s the most advanced nutritional supplement available for overcoming the major underlying causes of nervy, stressed behaviour. Sootha contains B-group vitamins and magnesium as deficiencies of these nutrients have been linked to nervous disorders in horses. Tryptophan has been added to these nutrients in Sootha to produce a combination reported to act as a mood stabiliser.

With the inclusion of Protexin multi-strain probiotic, Sootha breaks new ground by addressing the digestive system as an integral part of treatment. Whether disruption to the normal intestinal balance is the cause of stress or one of its symptoms, Protexin works to quickly reestablish intestinal balance with natural, healthy live bacteria.

Sootha should be administered to any horse already in a stressed condition or to those likely to become stressed, whether from training (for racing or competition), transportation, breaking in, a change of environment (such as agistment) or from any other cause. For horses involved in racing or competition, Sootha is non-swabbing.

Your intimate knowledge of your horse’s moods and behaviour places you in the best position to determine whether Sootha should be administered.

Some of the more obvious signs suggesting a need for Sootha are:

• picky eating

• pacing fences / stables

• sweating

• loose manure

• running race before it starts

• lack of concentration

• irritable, unpredictable or ‘spooky’ behaviour

• unwillingness to work

Scientific literature indicates that deficiencies of B-group vitamins and magnesium can lead to symptoms including excitability, muscular twitching, diarrhoea, and muscle stiffness. Vitamin B6 deficiencies have even been reported to produce neurological abnormalities resembling epilepsy. Feeding these nutrients to horses helps restore normal nervous function and produce a soothing effect. Tryptophan has also been shown to be effective as a mood stabiliser, particularly in conjunction with magnesium and vitamin B6. Even horses whose diets do not lack these nutrients may show reduced symptoms of stress when their diets are supplemented with Sootha.

Stress has an immediate effect on horses’ intestines, increasing the rate food passes through, reducing the ability to digest food and leaving the gut more susceptible to infection by harmful bacteria (which often cause scouring and diarrhoea) Sootha contains Protexin which floods the intestines with millions of beneficial gut bacteria to restore the correct balance while countering harmful pathogenic organisms.

Sootha works to overcome both the causes and effects of stress in horses, helping to correct behavioural problems which can prevent horses reaching their full potential.

Sootha is a palatable supplement which can be added to rations daily for horses susceptible to stress. With fussy eaters, introduce Sootha to the ration gradually over a number of days. For very difficulthorses, the 30g dose may be fed twice daily for 2–5 days. Internal upsets generally respond to the Protexin in Sootha within a week but nutritional deficiencies can take longer to correct. While every horse is different, modification to behaviour is often seen during the first 15 days of use. Horses will continue to show the positive effects of Sootha for some time after ceasing its use. For nervy horses, the best approach is to use Sootha daily whenever the source of stress is present.

EACH 30g DOSE

(1 LEVEL SCOOP)

CONTAINS:

Thiamin (B1) 2000mg

Ribofl avin (B2) 500mg

Pyridoxine (B6) 250mg

Magnesium 8.5g

Tryptophan 1000mg

Protexin 600 milllion cfu

Sootha Nerves & Stress Paste

Due to the needs of some horse owners for an alternative method of dosing, a special formulation better suited to oral administration has been developed.

With a formula that places primary concentration on vitamins/minerals Sootha Nerves & Stress Paste can be treated as a ‘stand alone’supplement or used in conjunction with the powder version, now in general use. When only a few horses in a herd require Sootha, horse owners often find the convenience of oral administration the preferred approach.
