Christoph Hess is back. The ever so popular German educator and judge is returning to Australia to chair the Ground Jury at the 2013 Melbourne International 3DE from 7-10 June. On his last visit Christoph commented on how much the Melbourne 3DE reminded him of the famous Badminton Horse Trials. So it is no surprise that Christoph did not think twice about coming back to Werribee Park. This year visitors to the event will also be treated to a special Masterclass. Think Olympic and Paralympic Medals, think Dressage and Eventing, think Christoph’s smart take on traditional Masterclasses; all combined this make for the ultimate Melbourne Masterclass.

Christoph will work with Victorian Dressage rider Natasha Althoff-Kelley and her pure-bred Friesian Ebony Park Abe. The black stallion is a crowd-favourite and has recently started competing in Grand Prix. Second in the arena will be the stars of 2012 London Paralympics, Joann Formosa and her stallion Worldwide PB. This Gold-medal winning combination is a delight to watch. Christoph and Joann will demonstrate the skill, horsemanship and communication that is required in Para-equestrian Dressage. Horses have to be very fine-tuned to the aids and voices of their riders in this discipline and spectators will experience first-hand what it takes for a rider with spinal cord and nerve damage, who doesn’t have strength in her legs, to ride a Dressage test.

Then Beijing Silver-medallist Megan Jones will show us how to overcome the hurdles in our daily life, a chair that is perhaps, or maybe a wheelbarrow. Horses, especially Eventing horses, have to be able to jump the most unusual items confidently. It will be exciting to see, what Christoph will ask Megan and her horse to jump. We may be in for a surprise!

The Masterclass is held at 10:00am on Saturday 8 June at the Werribee Park NEC. Tickets are available through Ticketek and at the gate.

EQUITANA Australia is proud to announce that legendry dressage trainer, Kyra Kyrklund, will be delivering the Specialist Dressage Clinic in Melbourne this year. And, partner and fellow dressage trainer, Richard White, will be coming out with her to co-present demonstrations in the daily Education Program.

Kyra Kyrklund has successfully combined both competing and training students in top international competition for more than 30 years. She has successfully trained and competed 15 horses in international Grand Prix dressage, has taken part in 6 Olympic Games, won a silver medal at the World Equestrian Games on Matador and has taken part in 6 World Cup finals, winning with Matador in 1991. She has and continues to train many successful international dressage riders including:-Emma Hindle, Imke Schellekens-Bartels, Minna Telde, Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgensten and Mary Hanna. Jan Brink, who trained with Kyra throughout her whole career with Briar, is now supervisor for the Swedish team.

The book “Dressage with Kyra” (co-written with Jytte Lemkow) has been published in seven languages and her training DVDs continue to be sold all over the world. Kyra is President of The International Dressage Rider’s Club and, as an accolade to her training accomplishments, was awarded the title, Professor of Equitation (Dressage) at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences last year.

Kyra’s clinics and symposiums are popular around the globe. She always demonstrates how she trains horses from a young one just starting dressage training up to Grand Prix, ensuring that her audience comes away with the steps to get it right from the beginning. Kyra’s training method encompasses treating the horses with kindness but firmness and using a logical and consistent system to obtain excellent results. Her incredible training skill, combined with a great sense of humour, has earned Kyra the reputation worldwide as “The Great Communicator”.

Richard White has been involved with horses all his life. When he finished his university degree, he decided to major in dressage and went to work in Germany as a Bereiter. He also studied at the French and Portuguese schools before returning to the UK to train and teach.

Richard has assisted Kyra with training, both at home and on competitions since 1990. He also works with many other international riders and since early 2006 has travelled regularly to Germany to train Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Emma Hindle. Although Richard can claim many memorable training moments over the years, he laughingly recalls the Aachen 2006 GP Warm-up, where he was training Kyra, Emma and Jan Brink at the same time – using 3 different headsets!

So don’t miss this amazing clinic with Kyra Kyrklund, “The Trainer’s Trainer”, or the wonderful daily demonstrations, where Richard White will add a further plateau of skill to the learning experience.

An idea that was discussed late in 2010 is now only months away from becoming a reality. Through hard work, dedication, long days on the phone as well as tours around the country recruiting horses and buyers, Horse Sales Australia have recently announced the dates for their inaugural horse auction.
June long weekend, 8th, 9th and 10th will see a new era of horse trading begin, Friday being a full day of inspections with the Auction taking place on the Saturday and Sunday.

The organisers have chosen Sydney as the location for their first ever auction and have ensured nothing but a first class display by securing the grounds of Sydney International Equestrian Centre. With catering, bar facilities, horsemanship displays and a trade village to compliment the auction there is certain to be something for everyone to enjoy over the three days.

“The International interest that we are experiencing is also generating lots of excitement! One of our agents has recently been O.S to talk with clients and research their needs.”

We have received really positive feedback from the horse industry about the sale. As we are not specialising in one breed or discipline we are offering the opportunity for sellers and buyers to place or purchase horses and find the perfect partner in every discipline .We currently have children’s ponies at every level, Andalusians, Arabs, Lipizzans and some outstanding imported and local Warmbloods to name a few of the horses listed to register. We are even hosting a section for brumbies!!!
The highlight will of course be the auction of the horses. With an expected 200+ horses from all different disciplines and age groups to be offered, if you are looking at buying a new horse, chances are there will be something that will take your interest.

“Horse auctions have been incredibly popular in the racing industry for as long as I can remember and still provide the best and fairest way to buy and sell, the concept has never been tried on equestrian horses due to the difficulties involved with inspecting,” said Horse Sales Australia founders. “ This is why we have decided to use SIEC, it enables the horse to be thoroughly inspected by buyers prior to bidding, the outstanding facilities allow us to give buyers a ‘try before you buy’ experience as well as giving buyers an insight to how the horse is likely to behave in a competition environment”
Randwick Equine clinic has been appointed as the auction veterinary service and is available for any pre-bidding inspections that may be required.
“We really are providing a complete service. By bringing all the buyers and sellers together we are taking the stress out of selling your horse and making it easy for buyers to inspect a large number of horses in a short period of time.”

One of the biggest chances you take when buying a horse is that they will be as well mannered and easy to ride when they are out at a competition as they are when you inspect them in their own familiar surroundings. The auction environment will be as close to a competition environment as you would need to get a really good idea of the horse’s temperament. This of course will be of particular interest to those buying horses off the track and young horses without a competition history.

Buyer registration is on the day of the auction, and entries are still being accepted if you have a horse to sell. Horse Sales Australia are also offering a sale preparation service if it is required.

Whether you are looking to buy your next superstar, interested in following the market or simply looking for a great weekend out, the Horse Sales Australia auction will be an event you will not want to miss.

Entries are being taken for the inaugural show for off-the-track Thoroughbreds conducted by the Thoroughbred Horse Show Association April 14-15, 2012 at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Thoroughbred Horse Show Association (TBHSA) Spring Show is geared for Thoroughbreds just starting their show careers with entry-level divisions in multiple disciplines, including dressage, combined training, hunter/jumper, and competitive trail riding. The TBHSA will hold a second show at the Kentucky Horse Park October 6-7, and is working with rescue organizations, trainers and others to hold additional events.

“I’ve received phone calls from people who are interested in the show from West Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington, D.C., in addition to Kentucky,” said TBHSA executive director Jan Roehl. “One woman from West Virginia said she wanted to bring her ex-racehorses just so she could ride them at the Kentucky Horse Park. Some people want to come a day or two early to enjoy Lexington.”

Legendary hunter/jumper trainer George Morris has endorsed the TBHSA and their efforts: “I am very, very excited about the direction the Thoroughbred Horse Show Association is going. It is the inevitable direction of the future to best utilize the source we have just forgotten about it, the Thoroughbred. Just because they are not Derby winners doesn’t mean they can’t make wonderful sport horses.”

The Thoroughbred Horse Show Association was founded in 2011 by a group of Central Kentuckians interested in creating opportunities to showcase the talent and competitive spirit of off-the-track Thoroughbreds. Horses must enter TBHSA shows using their registered names with The Jockey Club.

Horses competing in the TBHSA Spring Show will be eligible for The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Incentive Program High Point Awards. The Jockey Club will award ribbons, prizes, and $100 to the winner with the highest number of points in the following divisions: Starter Hunter, Hunter, Jumper, Beginner Novice Combined Test, Training Level Dressage, and First Level Dressage.

The opening reception for participants on April 13th will include a talk with Susan Posner about how to get the most from a Thoroughbred in the dressage ring. Posner is a noted dressage trainer who has ridden and trained ex-racehorses.

The show also will include a seminar titled “Ins and Outs of Feeding Your OTTB” with Kristen Janicki from Buckeye Feeds; tips from hunter judge Shelley Mann on show ring etiquette and what to do if things don’t go as planned in the show ring; and a presentation about success in showmanship by Samantha Kline. Former jockey P.J. Cooksey, director of public relations for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, will emcee the opening reception and present awards.

All roads lead to Bendick Murrell in mid April….20th to 22nd to be exact. If you haven’t heard before, the Donges IGA Young Dressage Championships are absolutely the place to go. It’s certainly worth the effort of a few hours drive to compete at this amazing, picturesque ground, situated half-way between Young and Cowra.

The sponsors have again been wonderfully supportive and there is money up for grabs through all levels and already over $12,000+ worth of prizes. With prizes given down to 6th place you are sure to come home with lots of goodies. You will even get your own embroidered cap, just for entering the event! The five sand competition arenas, huge sand warm up, plenty of shady parking all complement the weekend activities. Novelty events such as the Prix Caprilli, Freestyles and some restricted classes ensure that everyone gets a chance to compete on an even level.

With a couple of lead-up events prior to the championships (in February & March) there are even more opportunities to use these purpose built grounds. The very safe rubber lined yards are being increased in number, complimenting the available stabling. Stables this year will be allocated firstly to A/B level judges who are also riding, then to FEI horses. The yards will be all pre-booked and are very safe for all horses. Camping facilities are basic but certainly usable – hot/cold showers are being upgraded and extra toilets are some further improvements to the grounds.

The committee, though few in number, always manage to run a professional yet friendly event. With the support of Wendy Silk, Robert & Julie Donges, from Donges IGA supermarket, Mad Harry’s Michael Delamont (suppliers of the steel for yards) and local saddlery Giddy Up Gags and Bits supplying the championships rugs it all makes for another HUGE weekend. Ian, Jenny & Megan Bryant will be the main planners and builders of the new steel yards, together with supplying straw and hay for the event. The FEI big tour event is sponsored by Kingston Park Warmblood Stud, FEI Small tour sponsors are Equissage and Heather Ip from Cooramin Sporthorses will sponsor the Advanced Championship.

Friday 20th competition day will provide a perfect environment to bring out the young upcoming riders & horses/ponies. Starting at lunchtime will provide time for travelling to the grounds, with afternoon classes consisting Junior, Restricted, Associate Preliminary and Official Pony Novice. Saturday will provide a full program of official and associate classes with a class for everyone. The day will end with the special program consisting Freestyle, Pas De Deux and Prix Caprilli. The last day of the championships is aimed to be finished early afternoon to allow for travelling, with Official classes in FEI, Medium and Novice.

Don’t forget to enter for the event on www.nominate.com.au prior to 23rd March. No late entries will be accepted.
