Quaterback

Quaterback HERO

2003 – 2021 168 cm Chestnut

Breeder: Brandenburgisches Haupt- und Landgestüt, Neustadt/Dosse

Quaterback’s dam is Performance Horse Royalty – Passionata is a half sister to Poetin – who along with her full brothers, Samba Hit I-III, starred at the Bundeschampionate. Poetin and ‘the Sambas’ are by Sandro Hit and out of Poesie, by Brentano II, while Passionata is by Brandenburger, a performance test winner, who stood for many years at Neustadt Dosse – he also jumped at an advanced level, and had the reputation for producing excellent jumpers. His sire Beach Boy was by the French Anglo/Arab, Zeus out of a mare by the Thoroughbred, Lucky Boy. On his dam line we find the Ferdinand son, Wendekreis, and the Thoroughbred, Waidesmannsdank with his triple cross of Dark Ronald.

Passionata – performance horse royalty…

The dam’s family of Pauline (Charlatan-Lodz-Delgierter-Wachmeister) is one of the main lines at the State Stud Neustadt/Dosse – a line that has produced nearly 30 licensed stallions!

Quaterman

Quaterman

The sire, Quaterman is by Quando Quando, who went on to represent Australia in dressage at the Olympic Games. Quando Quando did his stallion test at Neustadt and they were quick to use him. He is out of a mare by Roccodero, a Holsteiner by Rocco (by the Ramzes son, Rigoletto). Quaterman was the Reserve Champion of the Stallion Licensing at Neustadt and went on to win his stallion performance test. He qualified three times to compete at the Bundeschampionate, and has a reputation as a producer of foals with excellent movement.

Quaterback was the Reserve champion of the 2005 joint licensing held by the Verbands of Berlin-Brandenburg and Sachsen-Anhalt. In 2006 he was the three year old stallion champion at the Bundeschampionate with high scores for trot and canter, and 10s for rideability from both test riders.

At his 30 day performance test at Neustadt/Dosse he scored 8.89 overall, with a 9.14 dressage score and 8.43 for jumping.

 Quaterback

As a sire, Quaterback has been greatly in demand and in a sign of the times, he has been marketed by three different stallion stations in his relatively short career. At Gerd Sosath: 2007, 2010, 2012-14, at Celle: 2009 – 2018 and at Neustadt from 2008 – 2017, 2019 – 2021.

He is certainly the sire of some very expensive babies. In 2008, he was the sire of the winner of the German Foal Championships, along with Foal Champions in Belgium, the USA, and other breeding districts in Germany. At the Verden Foal auction, a colt by Quaterback sold for €120,000, and that colt, Quasar de Charry went on to win a premium at the Hanoverian Licensing in 2010.

In 2009, he was the sire of the Licensing Champion in Brandenburg-Anhalt, Quäntchen Glück, and the following year, supplied the Brandenburg Riding Horse Champion, Quadroneur.

Quatergold was the dressage champion of the Brandenburg-Anhalt Licensing in 2010. Quatergold went on to be Reserve Champion at the Bundeschampionate in 2011.

Quinzanos was the reserve champion of the Oldenburger Licensing in 2011, and Quotenkönig, was reserve champion, North-Rhein Westfalian, in the same year. Quotenkönig was a reserve champion at the Bundeschampionate in 2012.

Quaterstern won the Southern German Licensing in 2012.

Quaterback is the sire of 45 licensed sons.

The Hanoverian Stallion Year Book of 2022, records that Quaterback is the sire of 740 competitors, with winnings of €641,898. Quaterback’s own career saw him win €4,432, and he peaked at St Georges level dressage. He is the sire of eight horses that have won more than €10,000 – the most successful being Isabell Werth’s Quantaz with €94,788.

Quantaz and Isabell Werth – the most successful

His FN dressage ranking for 2022 as a producer of young horses is 129 but his highest level achieved value is 158.

For type, on the 2022 Hanoverian values, he scores 125, and for conformation 138.

Based on the Hanoverian evaluation of mare tests and auction inspection, he has a dressage value of 117, with 118 for trot, 143 for his own most spectacular gait, canter, and an 83 for the dodgy walk he passes on. His jumping value is a negative 86.

Quaterback was represented in the Five Year Old dressage championships at the 2013 Bundeschampionate by four of his progeny – and they all looked and went, quite differently.

Quasar de Charry and Ingo Pape

From the well-known Pape Stallion Station, Quasar de Charry (out of a Wolkentanz II mare) is a cute little thing, like his dad, and like dad, chestnut with lots of chrome, but the stallion looks even smaller with the very very tall Ingo Pape on top. The horse has a flicky artificial trot and he is hot and distracted. They missed the cut on a 7.4.

Quasar de Charry had success at the 2021 Nürnberger Burg-Pokal, he was the sire of the stallion, Quizmaster, out of a Velten Third mare. Quizmaster was third.

5yoQuaterhall

Quaterhall in the 5 year old championship

The next, another stallion, was Quaterhall, out of a Donnerhall mare, ridden for the State Stud Celle by Wolfhard Witte. The dark chestnut is a better size with longer lines and a much nicer natural trot, and the judges awarded him a 9 for trot, an 8 for walk, and a 9 for canter, and they end up in =4th after the first go round on a score of 8.5.

The next was Quatertime, out of a Donatelli mare. A big, soft moving horse, almost too laid back. They scored 8.2. Then there’s Quirino-Rocco, out of a Piaster mare. A big bay gelding, the most normal looking of the four. A big trot, not at all flicky like his dad, and a again very ridable. Only 8 because of a 7.5 for walk.

In the end, there are four by Quaterback in the top 26.

The most successful was Quaterhall, a little hiccup in the counter canter but the horse looked so rideable. 9 for trot, 8 for walk, 8 for canter, 8 for rideability and correctness of training, 8.5 for general impression = 8.3 to finish in 5th in the final line up.

Quaterback and the test rider, a 12 for canter?.

In an interview in 2014, Head of the Neustadt-Dosse stud, Dr Jürgen Müller said of his stallion star:
“Quaterback is now eleven years old, and he is now the sire of 56 stallion sons, licensed all over the world. The quality he gives is very good – in trot and very good in canter. When he won at the Bundeschampionate in 2006, the judges said we should have given him 12 for the canter, we are sorry that it is only possible to give 10. He has very good foals, we send semen all over the world. That is our bank, and we wish him a long life so that we can take a little bit more money.”

Quaterback, sire of stallion sons…

Are there certain mares that he is best with?
“Now that he is eleven, we know what is the best mare for him, the longer the stallion lives, the better you know what he needs. He needs some blood from the Thoroughbred and also from the Trakehner line. He needs very solid mares who are clear in the head and have a very good character – all his offspring have very good movement, for example last year in the Bundeschampionate, in the five year old class, there were five young horses by him. They are light to ride, but the rider must be good, his progeny are no sleepy heads.”

At home at Neustadt-Dosse…

On the 2020 WBFSH dressage stallion rankings, Quaterback is in 4th place – having moved up from 5th the previous year, represented by 13 competitors with two in the top 50 – DSP Quantaz (Hohenstein) in 28th and Quater Back Junior FRH, ranked 32nd.On the 2021 rankings, he has slipped back to fifith.
