or use delayed rewards or punishment, or underestimate\u00a0horse intelligence -&#8216; you can do what you like to horses because they have no emotions and they can&#8217;t suffer.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/GlennisPat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59194\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/GlennisPat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/GlennisPat.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/GlennisPat-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/GlennisPat-429x300.jpg 429w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 2:<\/strong> With negative reinforcement it&#8217;s the release of pressure that trains, and so it&#8217;s essential to release pressure for the required response. <strong>Whenever pressure is removed, you are rewarding the\u00a0behaviour, even when horses invade your space and you retreat.<\/strong> Food rewards, if used, should be immediate on the response or they can follow a\u00a0secondary reinforcer such as a voice or clicker that must be immediate on the response. \u00a0Punishment should be avoided, however if used it must be\u00a0immediate on the response. And classical conditioning means that aids should be miniaturised to light versions of pressure, and then converted to whatever cues you choose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 3:<\/strong> Make sure signals for all separate responses and movements are possible for the horse to discriminate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 4:<\/strong> Build complex responses gradually, in easy steps from the beginning simple one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/OutofHere.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59195\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/OutofHere.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/OutofHere.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/OutofHere-300x279.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/OutofHere-322x300.jpg 322w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 5:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t use two different aids at once. Each aid should elicit a particular response. In most cases it will be a limb movement that occurs in a discreet moment in each particular gait. <strong>Even in a pirouette,\u00a0aids should follow the sequence for perfect execution.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 6:<\/strong> Make sure each response has its own unique signal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NicolePat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59196\" src=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NicolePat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NicolePat.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NicolePat-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/NicolePat-500x282.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 7<\/strong>: Be consistent so that in training you ask for the response in the same way, and place, each time and build habits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle 8:<\/strong> Train the horse to keep going until you tell him otherwise (so you&#8217;re not continually nagging him). This is self-carriage. Keep arousal levels as low as possible with regard to the response you are training.
