“Collection means the development of carrying power. The compression of the joints of the hind leg increases. The centre of\u00a0 gravity is shifted more towards the haunches. The prerequisites are all the previous criteria of the Training Scale – this is particularly true of straightness and impulsion, Schwung.”<\/h1>\n

Therefore the rider should be very aware of the faults that can occur during the development of Schwung – they are:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

* Irregularity (by asking too much)
\n* Circus trot or tense passage-like steps (caused by a tense back)
\n* Faulty connection (such as tilting of the head)
\n* Rushing
\n* Running
\n* Falling on the forehand
\n* Extension without lengthening the frame
\n* Going wide behind<\/h3>\n

Some beginning collection exercises are:<\/h1>\n

* Tempo variations in trot and canter
\n* Trot – Halt transitions
\n* Rein back
\n* Halt transitions
\n* Frequent canter – walk transitions
\n* Decreasing and increasing the circle in canter
\n* Eight metre volt\u00e9s<\/h3>\n

When a further degree of collection has been achieved, the following can be practised:<\/h1>\n

* Counter canter
\n* Simple changes
\n* Turns on the haunches
\n* Turns on the haunches with halting before and after<\/h3>\n

The following criteria become obvious in collection:<\/h1>\n

* Harmony between horse and rider. Barely visible aids
\n* Elegance and presence in the horse
\n* Elevated, cadenced, impressive movement
\n* Lowering of the haunches with a corresponding elevation of the forehand
\n* Self carriage. light contact
\n* Carrying power, elasticity and spring<\/h3>\n
