The second duty of the inside leg is the basis of collection. People think about the top of the horse when they think collection, but it is the inside hind leg that comes under the body shadow of the horse, that starts the back to front collecting of the horse. Nothing, nothing that I teach did I invent. I put things together maybe in an interesting package, but I didn\u2019t invent any of this.\u201d<\/em><em>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-44166 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GeorgeCounterCanter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GeorgeCounterCanter.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/GeorgeCounterCanter-282x300.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe inside leg to the outside rein is ancient history. One of my friends is very interested in ballet, and he said to me last year, George, &#8216;it is opposition in the dance that creates balance&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Inside leg to outside rein, puts the horse in balance \u2013 it makes the horse straight, and puts the horse in balance.\u201d<\/h1>\n<p>\u201cThe neck is attached to the shoulder and is straight. The first two thirds of the neck should be quite stiff. If you sit down you make them quick and hollow. Keep your body well forward, I want you to just squat in the saddle. Every horse will be rounder if you stay forward, stay forward like Beezie Madden, like John Whitaker and Nick Skelton. It is nothing to do with this forced over-flexion.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWhen the horse is dead to your legs, don\u2019t kick and make it deader. Use the whip, use the spur. You have to understand the mechanics of the horse being put to the bit \u2013 just one quick attack with both spurs and get the horse\u2019s hind legs.<strong> I want the poll up and the jaw soft but not over-flexed. The indoor German shows are all bending lines, they are good to supple the horse, good for the rider\u2019s precision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46057 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/POLE-exercise.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/POLE-exercise.jpg 380w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/POLE-exercise-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u201cThe poles are just to keep your horses straight \u2013 you are so obsessed with neck bending.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cSink, stretch, inside leg, outside rein, and stop.&#8221;<\/h1>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s a mantra for every downward transition. Every downward transition perfects the half halt.
