JUMPING DAY TWO<\/h2>\n

Class One: Prize of Handwerks<\/u><\/p>\n

The first class of the day was a 1.45m single round class, judged on penalties and time. There were a number of top horses in this class that were clearly using it as a warm-up for the bigger classes later in the week.<\/p>\n

First out on course was USA\u2019s Kent Farrington with Creedance (Lord Z x Notaris) who put in a lovely steady clear with just one time to add.<\/p>\n

Third out gave us our first clear under the time allowed, Grand Cooper (Lord Z x Berlin) with Pius Schwizer (SUI); the nice big rangey grey wasted no time through the turns, finishing in 66.63 seconds.<\/p>\n

One who grabbed attention was the bay stallion Andiamo Semilly (Diamant de Semilly x Muguet du Manoir) who displayed a wonderful back end technique while wasting no time, beautifully ridden by France\u2019s Penelope Leprevost to a clear in 71.90 seconds.<\/p>\n

A slow but oh-so-stylish clear was produced by Daniel Deusser (GER) with Calisto Blue (Chacco-Blue x Con Air); this gelding just has so much scope and is so extravagant, despite a relatively steady time of 78.57 seconds I\u2019m calling it as round of the day.<\/p>\n

Number 17 out was Jur Vrieling (NED) with Baltic VDL (Quaprice Bois Margot x Jus de Pomme); despite getting a little strong the stallion jumped with superb technique, posting a very good clear in 66.90 seconds and into second place so far.<\/p>\n

A few later came Vancouver Dreams (Valentino x Stakkato) with Max K\u00fchner (AUT), and the very pretty chestnut with the fancy canter showed off both in front and behind over the fences, to post one of my favourite rounds of the class clear in 70.90 seconds.<\/p>\n

Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) and Forever (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Chin Chin) produced an unhurried clear but taking the shortest lines, 69.71 seconds.<\/p>\n

Later in the draw came the very beautiful F One USA (Toulon x Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve) with Ben Maher (GBR); turning back to fence three the gelding stumbled over his own feet and came down hard on top of Ben. After a heart stopping moment it became clear that neither of them were hurt.<\/p>\n

Getting towards the end of the field we saw the stunning stallion Faro (Calvaro x Contendro II) with Willem Greve (NED); this stallion has such a great canter and explosive jump, and Willem piloted him on nice tight lines to post a time of 70.97 seconds.<\/p>\n

Second last out was Germany\u2019s Andre Thieme with Cellisto (Celestrial x Calypso II), and the big bay cantered around calmly but without wasting any time, cutting one out to the last to go into the lead with 66.60 seconds.<\/p>\n

Last out we saw Darragh Kenney (IRL) with the oh so pretty stallion\u00a0 Cazador LS (Casall x Dollar dela Pierre), and with his huge canter and endless scope he put in an exceptionally fast and clever clear to take the win in 63.48 seconds!<\/p>\n

    Class Two: Turkish Airlines Prize of Europe Grand Prix<\/u><\/p>\n

    The second class of the day was the tough 1.55m Grand Prix, which was an important qualifying class for those not already qualified for Sunday\u2019s Rolex Grand Prix. This class carried a prize of \u20ac125,000, so the stakes were high!<\/p>\n

    Even before the class began it was clear the combination 9AB was going to be influential: a triple bar over a water tray, 2 strides to a vertical over a water tray, approached on a curving related line and right up against a lake running along the left length of the combination.<\/p>\n

    This gut feeling was validated with the second on course, the beautiful big Empire (Chacco-Blue x Quattro) with Doron Kuipers (NED), who was jumping an excellent round until 9A, awkward half jump landing in middle of fence, and pulled up at part B; Doron regrouped and represented, for the same result.<\/p>\n

    The first clear came from fourth out, France\u2019s Olivier Robert riding Vivaldi des Meneaux (Chippendale Z x Bamako X); this stylish sharp jumper was foot perfect through the tough double, and nothing else caused issues either.<\/p>\n

    Next out was the wonderful little Fit For Fun (For Pleasure x Fabriano) with Portugal\u2019s Luciana Diniz; this combination are just a pleasure to watch, and the super athletic little mare skipped around for a clear, but one one-hundreth over the time allowed!! So one time to add. But enough to qualify for Sunday\u2019s Grand Prix, so job done.<\/p>\n

    Next came the fancy Sterrehof\u2019s Dante (Canturano x Phin Phin) and Marc Houtzager (NED), clear with his characteristic tail flick, and into the jump-off.<\/p>\n

    A number of combinations fell victim to the dreaded 9AB double, and the treble at 6ABC \u2013 vertical, one stride, oxer, two strides, oxer \u2013 caused a large amount of grief too; jumping directly into the crowd seemed to back them right off, and many were caught short in the middle of the combination.<\/p>\n

    One to fall victim to this treble was the big powerful stallion Loro Piana Filou de Muze (Stakkato x Rubens du Ry d\u2019Asse) and Italy\u2019s Lucia le Jeune Vizzini, who backed right off coming in and despite using all of his scope, could not make it out over the third element and both horse and rider fell. Thankfully all were unharmed and walked off course.<\/p>\n

    Number 13 in the draw was Laura Klaphake (GER) and the lovely big Bantou Balou (Balou du Rouet x Joker) who had a beautiful clear up until the dreaded double, where the big gelding decided to the crowd\u2019s delight that it was a much safer option to jump the enormous brush flanking the fence than to risk the water tray; he was unwavering in his opinion on the second approach and again opted to leap the brush. Unfortunate elimination.<\/p>\n

    A combination to have no issues with the bogey treble and double was the Netherland\u2019s Willem Greve with Carambole (Cassini I x Concerto 4), who jumped an absolutely flawless round with a few bucks thrown in for fun, only to have the last down!<\/p>\n

    The two combinations continued to accrue victims, but the beautiful Chardonnay 79 (Clarimo x Corrado I) had no such issues, carrying Max K\u00fchner to a very stylish clear with just a time fault keeping them from the jump-off.<\/p>\n

    Next in the ring was the pretty little stallion Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Mr. Blue) and Daniel Deusser, who just floated over the fences to post a brilliant clear.<\/p>\n

    Then came the cute chunky little Darry Lou (Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve x Nabab de R\u00eave) with another beautifully balanced clear.<\/p>\n

    One of my favourite horses to watch came in at number 32 in the draw, Explosion W (Chacco-Blue x Baloubet du Rouet) with Ben Maher (GBR); this gelding is so exuberant, and just ate up the course with his boundless scope to put himself into the jump-off.<\/p>\n

    The super sharp and careful Gazelle (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Indoctro) and Kent Farrington (USA) posted a clever, careful, easy clear.<\/p>\n

    The slightly unorthodox Hello Jefferson (Cooper van de Heffinck x Irco Mena) and Scott Brash (GBR) jumped a scopey clear, but a naughty jack-up in the corner after fence seven saw them add two time! It really does happen to the best of us.<\/p>\n

    Next out was the calm and composed stallion Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot (L\u2019Arc de Triomphe x Apache d\u2019Adriers) and the Spanish Eduardo Alvarez Aznar, posting a very pleasant clear under time.<\/p>\n

    Second place to the wonderfully laid-back Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot for Spain\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

    The Verdi daughter Fluerette (Verdi TN x Concorde) looks so much like her father, and with the USA\u2019s Laura Kraut jumped a powerful clear.<\/p>\n

    Right towards the end of the draw in 48 we saw Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) with the stunning big stallion H&M Extra (Berlin x Heartbreaker); this guy just has the prettiest head, and jumped around with great style for one of the nicest clears of the day.<\/p>\n

    So that put 11 into the jump-off.<\/p>\n

    The first double clear came from second out in the jump-off Marc Houtzager, who piloted Sterrehof\u2019s Dante to an unhurried clear in 50.13 seconds.<\/p>\n

    Daniel Deusser was the first to really put the pressure on, inside to the second, brilliant ride in 47.71 seconds.<\/p>\n

    Beezie Madden elected to not come forward into the jump-off, so next in the ring was Ben Maher; this gelding has the most enormous canter, and with Ben taking all the inside lines they shaved over a second off Daniel\u2019s time in 46.28 seconds.<\/p>\n

    Eduardo Alvarez Aznar and Rokfeller de Pleville Bois Margot tackled the course like a typical laid-back Spaniard, hardly raising a sweat yet deceptively quick and clear in 47.08 seconds.<\/p>\n

    Laura Kraut and Fleurette are flying right from the start, and were set to post a blistering time until they misjudged the last and both fell. Really disappointing, but both walked out unharmed.<\/p>\n

    Last to go was Olivier Philippaerts and H&M Extra, beautiful but not too fast; a slip after fence seven but recovered nicely, clear in 49.81 seconds and into fourth place.<\/p>\n

      Class Three: Prize of the St<\/u>\u00e4dte Region Aachen<\/u><\/p>\n

      The final class of the day was the two-phase, 1.50m class.<\/p>\n

      First in the ring was Angelie von Essen (SWE) with Daniel (Heartbreaker x Cavalier), who produced a great double clear with an impressive turn inside the wall to the last fence, throwing down the gauntlet in 38.06 seconds.<\/p>\n

      Next out was the big rangey stallion Vancouver de Lanlore (Toulon x Le Tot de Semilly) with Penelope Leprevost, with a relaxed double clear in 45.66 seconds.<\/p>\n

      One of my favourite horses of the show PSG Future (Toulon x Cassini) cleared everything by 2 feet; such an unbelievable athlete, a steady double clear in 47.90.<\/p>\n

      The big, slow cantering Chica BZ (Canturano x Berlin) and Martin Fuchs (SUI) took all the inside lines, and were the first to attempt a daring line inside the water to 10; the risk paid off, clear and into the lead in 34.54 seconds.<\/p>\n

      The cute pony-like grey Vertigo du Desert (Mylord Carthago x Robin II Z) with Portugal\u2019s Luciana Diniz has the most massive jump for a little guy, and took all the inside lines to nab the lead in 33.44 seconds, a brilliant round.<\/p>\n

      The beautiful and exuberant Dallas VDL (Douglas x Heartbreaker) and Jur Vrieling (NED) had an awful fall at the wall at four, however both walked away unharmed.<\/p>\n

      The large, rather plain looking Killer Queen VDM (Eldorado van de Zeshoek x For Pleasure) has anything but a plain jump, with the big-jumping mare posting a classy unrushed clear in the quick time of 36.20 seconds.<\/p>\n

      Felix Hassmann (GER) and his hot little mare Balance 30 (Balou du Rouet x Ex Libris) took all the inside lines and finished clear in 35.47 seconds.<\/p>\n

      Sunshine du Phare (Kannan x Domino du Moyon) and Roger Yves Bost (FRA) posted a blisteringly fast jump-off in the fastest time yet of 33.89 seconds, however the inside turn to the last cost them dearly when it came down.<\/p>\n

      Philipp Weishaupt (GER) meant business from the outset with the big, slow-jumping Coby 8 (Contagio x Escudo I); despite spending a lot of time in the air, this two took the tightest of lines at the fastest pace, coming home into the lead in 32.50 seconds.<\/p>\n

      A win in the last for Philipp Weishaupt and Coby 8<\/em><\/p>\n

      Kevin Staut (FRS) with Viking d\u2019la Rousserie (Quaprice Bois Margot x Apache d\u2019Adriers) showed great technique without being in a hurry, taking a couple of the outside options and finishing double clear in 44.81 seconds.<\/p>\n

      Spain\u2019s Eduardo Alvarez Aznar and Seringat (Chef Rouge x Guillaume Tell) posted a lovely flowing double clear to land on the leader board in 36.94 seconds, quick but not quick enough.<\/p>\n
