Olympic veteran\u00a0Beezie Madden <\/strong>has been elected for induction into the\u00a0Show Jumping Hall of Fame<\/strong>. She will be honored, together with Olympic rider Margie Engle and McLain Ward\u2019s two-time gold medal Olympic mount, Sapphire, during the Hall of Fame\u2019s induction dinner on Sunday evening, March 6 at the Wanderers Club in Wellington, Florida.<\/p>\n

For over three decades, Elizabeth \u201cBeezie\u201d Madden has been one of the nation\u2019s \u2013 and the world\u2019s \u2013 most successful riders. She has ridden in four Olympic Games (winning four medals), three World Equestrian Games (winning four medals), three Pan American Games (winning five medals) and 12 World Cup Finals, placing in the top 5 five times and winning the title in 2013 and 2018.<\/p>\n

As a mainstay on four consecutive Olympic teams, Beezie won team Gold medals in 2004 and 2008 (both with Authentic) in addition to team Silver in 2016 (with Cortes C) and the individual Bronze in 2008. She won team and individual Silver at the World Equestrian Games in 2006 and team and individual Bronze in 2014 when her mount, Cortes C, was named \u201cBest Horse.\u201d She is the only American rider to win an individual medal in show jumping World Championships more than once!<\/p>\n

Beezie Madden\u2019s team Gold medals at the Pan American Games came with Conquest II in 2003 and Coral Reef Via Vola in 2011 when she also won the individual Silver. She also won team and individual Bronze with Breitling LS in 2019. She has also ridden on 18 winning Nations Cup teams.<\/p>\n

In addition to her World Cup wins on Simon (2013) and Breitling LS (2018), Beezie has wins at some of the world\u2019s biggest and most prestigious events including the Grand Prix of Aachen (2007), King George V Gold\u00a0Cup at Hickstead (2014, 2015), $1 million International Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows Masters (2005, 2019) and Spruce Meadows\u2019 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (three times) in addition to virtually all of this country\u2019s biggest Grand Prix including the President\u2019s Cup, National Horse Show, American Gold Cup, Hampton Classic, $1 million HITS Grand Prix (three times), American Invitational (2005, 2007, 2014) and many of the various Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival.<\/p>\n

Beezie Madden was the first American to be ranked in the top-three on the FEI Jumping World Ranking List and the first woman to pass the $1 million mark in earnings. She has won the USEF Equestrian of the Year award five times, including winning it back-to-back \u2013 the first rider ever to do so \u2013 in 2006 and 2007 and then again in 2013 and 2014. She also won the USET Foundation Whitney Stone Cup in 2006, 2007 and 2014. She is the only one to win the award in consecutive years and the only one to win it three times. Beezie was named the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Female Equestrian Athlete of the Year in 1989 and in 2020 she was inducted to the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Beezie Madden has been one of the enduring treasures of showjumping for almost two decades. In 2004 she was the first woman to amass $1,000,000 in winnings from showjumping, and the same year, won team gold at the Athens Games\u2026 In 2019, Beezie is still at the top of her game and comes to G\u00f6teborg as the defending champion, having won the cup in Paris last year. Lucky then to catch up with her, the day before the Jumping final began.<\/p>\n

Can we talk about your basic principles when it comes to training and riding?
\n<\/em>\u201cMy basic principles are to stick to the basics really. At the same time, I like to treat each horse as an individual. You can\u2019t get too locked up into having one system for all horses, but I think we try to make everything have sense and having building blocks \u2013 when you start with a young horse you\u2019ve got to work on the rideability, all the basic things before you can move up the levels. It\u2019s the same thing with training riders, they need the basics, the correct position, in order to be able to influence the horse in the correct way. If you do your homework, that\u2019s what leads to success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are you working with something similar to the German Training Scale, rhythm, relaxation, before you get complicated\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cProbably I am a little more American, forward style seat riding than some of the Germans, but I think it is all getting quite similar now, they have more horses with more and more blood. The horses are becoming more similar, and so are the riders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Would you prefer to ride a Thoroughbred horse?
\n<\/em>\u201cThey are breeding Thoroughbreds now a much smaller size, much more speed, and not so many of them make it to jumping anymore, but I do like a horse with a lot of blood. I don\u2019t like a horse that is too cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Can you tell me a little about the horse you\u2019ve brought here to defend your title, Breitling\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s thirteen, we\u2019ve had him since he was seven. He came from Jeroen Dubbeldam. He was born in Mexico, on the La Silla Stud. He\u2019s good for this competition because he\u2019s quite rideable, he\u2019s handy, he\u2019s fast when I need him to be fast. He\u2019s careful and he has enough blood to jump quite a few rounds \u2013 he proved it last year, we\u2019ll see what he does this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Have you given him a big prep or a light prep, coming here?
\n<\/em>\u201cHe\u2019s had a bit of a light season heading towards this. He did some indoor shows in the fall, he won the World Cup qualifier in Washington, then he had almost two months break, then we started him up in Wellington, he did three competitions, one was kind of a prep week, then another when he did the nations cup and then a third week where he did a five-star Grand Prix. I did several classes before that to make sure he was show-fit enough to jump enough rounds \u2013 he was third in the last Grand Prix so hopefully we have him peaking at the right moment, but you never know until you try\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Beezie and Breitling win in Washington<\/em><\/p>\n

What attracted you about Breitling in the first place?
\n<\/em>\u201cHe was seven when we bought him and he had tremendous jumping ability. The moment we saw him on the cross-ties, he drew us towards him because he is not just beautiful but very classy looking. We\u2019ve done business with Jeroen before so we had a lot of trust in him, we saw some videos of the horse\u2026 When I tried the horse, I loved the feeling and felt like I\u2019d like to work with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting a horse from Jeroen you know there is no trash on it, he is such a classy rider\u2026
\n<\/em>\u201cAnd Jeroen had the horse since he was two, so he had a beautiful upbringing. We had a lot of confidence when we made that buy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you prefer to buy a horse like that \u2013 a horse that has been well started, or do you prefer to start them yourself?
\n<\/em>\u201cWhen you see a good horse, you have to jump on it. For sure it\u2019s nice to work with a horse when he is young, then you feel when he is nine or ten you are ready to do something important, something big, if the horse is up to that. When you get them when they are older it takes time to get a partnership. If you get them when they are young you develop that partnership as they get older.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What drove you to make riding and jumping your life?
\n<\/em>\u201cMy parents had horses when I was born, so I grew up in a stable. I started riding when I was three or four years old in riding school, it was just a natural thing. I seemed to have some talent for it, I liked it. I love horses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is it still as much of a buzz for you?
\n<\/em>\u201cYeah, I love the competition, I love working with horses. The challenge of trying to find the next good horse, trying to win the next championship, or being a part of the team, it\u2019s still there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Your parents, were they your first teachers?
\n<\/em>\u201cPretty much, they always tried to have another person to teach the riding, but as far as horsemanship and taking care of the horses, it all came from my parents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who were the most important teachers for you?
\n<\/em>\u201cI don\u2019t know, I had quite a few growing up. I trained with, and worked for, Katie Prudent when I was just out of college, actually just starting college, so I was with her for at least five years. Then I went to work for John, my husband now, he mostly had sale horses, but we kind of found a way to go to Europe and compete and developed owners over the years. George (Morris) has been a big influence for me. He rides my horses sometimes, he always has tips. My husband John and I have been working together since 1988.\u201d<\/p>\n

Do you like the way course designing has developed? George Morris is always complaining that the sport is being \u2018pussified\u2019, that the distinctive jumps as being lost\u2026
\n<\/em>\u201cI think we have to be careful that it doesn\u2019t get too \u2018cookie cutter\u2019 but times have changed. Modern times, you have to think of horse welfare, the breeding of the horses we compete with has changed, less brute power and more quality and lightness, so I think we do have to evolve that way, but at the same time we have to keep some different kinds of fences, but I think the best shows still have those.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ludger Beerbaum, the other day, said to me that he thought with the banning of hind boots, breeders might have to concentrate on breeding horses with a better natural hind end. Do you use back boots?
\n<\/em>\u201cProbably on most horses, not all, but we do. Mostly we use milder ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Will it be a bigger challenge, preparing them when you can\u2019t use the boots?
\n<\/em>\u201cWe used to live without them all the time. Actually, it will probably favor the better riders because if you don\u2019t have the boots to help, you can\u2019t just turn them in the air. It might slow some of the jump offs down a little, so the horse gets time to use its hind end properly. It\u2019s going to be the same for everybody, it\u2019s not like someone can use boots and someone can\u2019t. I grew up without using any kind of hind boots. maybe in the end, it will be for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Are you a bit person, are you like Kathy Kusner with a suitcase full of bits?
\n<\/em>\u201cNo, I don\u2019t take a suitcase full of bits, I like pelhams, a little bit of gags, snaffles, but I don\u2019t get too creative.\u201d<\/p>\n
