{"id":9924,"date":"2013-03-13T15:21:31","date_gmt":"2013-03-13T04:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/?p=9924"},"modified":"2016-10-12T16:45:50","modified_gmt":"2016-10-12T05:45:50","slug":"a-photographers-view-of-dressage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/2013\/03\/a-photographers-view-of-dressage\/","title":{"rendered":"A Photographer&#8217;s View of Dressage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/2013\/03\/a-photographers-view-of-dressage\/11-30-d1819-roze-hector-aus\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9933\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/11-30-d1819-Roze-Hector-AUS.jpg\" alt=\"11-30-d1819-Roze Hector-AUS\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The dressage photographer has a privileged position arena-side: right there with the judges \u2013 perhaps with a better view at ground level \u2013 and the advantage of a lens that lets you see and feel what is going on between horse and rider.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been photographing the world\u2019s best dressage horses for over 20 years, and right now I feel we are travelling in a good direction, but then again, back when I started looking at top-level competition, there was not a lot to complain about\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A long, long, time ago, in 1990, the first World Equestrian Games were held in Stockholm. The Games were fantastic. The clever Swedes organised, programmed, and conducted them in a way that is yet to be bettered.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/2013\/03\/a-photographers-view-of-dressage\/rembrandtharrystockholm-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9960\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9960 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtHarryStockholm1.jpg\" alt=\"Rembrandt Harry Stockholm\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtHarryStockholm1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtHarryStockholm1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Nicole and Remmi working with Harry Boldt at Stockholm\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The highlights were Rembrandt, the gazelle, with Nicole Uphoff, and Matador, the bouncing black ball, and Kyra Kyrklund. Remmy was light and elegant, he danced around the arena, Nicole was invisible. Matador was a power machine and his piaffe was amazing \u2013 he bounced from diagonal to diagonal. Watching the two working was so exciting, so beautiful. The deep-and-low work was not a fight, there was no ugly hauling to the chest. At her recent clinic in Melbourne Kyra remarked that she has never used rollk\u00fcr in her training, doesn\u2019t know what it really is and sticks to the classic principles she learnt in her years with Herbert Rehbein.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/2013\/03\/a-photographers-view-of-dressage\/rembrandtchange\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9942\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9942 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtChange.jpg\" alt=\"Nicole Uphoff &amp; Rembrandt\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtChange.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/RembrandtChange-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u00a0Nicole Uphoff &amp; Rembrandt<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On a slightly embarrassing note, as Rembrandt came out of the arena, Nicole dropped the reins to put on her jacket \u2013 as she did, Remmi started to piaffe. I was so startled I backed away to record the moment, and fell in a heap at the feet of the World Champions. The horse was described to us by Monica\u2019s father as a \u2018big black panther\u2019 and his work was smooth as silk, a perfect example of the classical training of the Theodorescu family. Over the years it was a privilege to watch them train at home. When helping the rider establish piaffe rhythm, Georg assisted by walking after the horse with a dressage whip. He told Chris and I that a steward told him he could not walk behind the horse with a whip in his hand at a competition. Not a problem said Georg, and took out the pocket handkerchief that he always had in the top pocket of his jacket, and used that as his metronome.<\/p>\n<p>Great to see Monica take over as the German dressage coach in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/2013\/03\/a-photographers-view-of-dressage\/drklimke\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9963\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9963 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/DrKlimke-233x300.jpg\" alt=\"DrKlimke\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/DrKlimke-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.horsemagazine.com\/thm\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/DrKlimke-796x1024.jpg 796w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Dr Klimke and Biotop at Wiesbaden, the horse had been unrideable when Dr Klimke took him on<\/em><\/p>\n<p>We were never lucky enough to see Dr Klimke and Ahlerich compete, luckily there is still video footage to be had that shows a clean athletic style of dressage.
