Event Riders Masters 2018 Leg 4

EVENT RIDER MASTERS (ERM)  2018 Leg 4  – ST JAMES’S PLACE BARBURY HORSE TRIALS

Thomas Carlile (FR) and Upsilon win Leg 4, Gemma Tattersall (GBR) and Pamero 4 finish in second place. Chris Burton (AUS) and Polystar I finish 3rd in Leg 4 and with it the top spot on the Series Leaderboard. Pics Anna Franklin and Ben Clark

“I was good in there huh? I rode it just now like I’m meant to ride and it was good to put the ball back onto the pitch. He’s such a wonderful animal that the biggest danger is just us losing our concentration. After all we aren’t robots and blips happen. Whether the course is tough or easy isn’t an issue with a horse like Upsilon, it’s just about switching our brains on.” Commented Tom after the Show Jumping.

Upsilon is a Section 3 Anglo-Arab stallion, although it should be noted that Upsilon is out of an Anglo dam, but by the Holsteiner Canturo (Cantus / Calando I) Michael Jung’s Takinou is also a Part 3 Anglo Arab, although again, his sire is Jaguar Mail, Selle Français, but 80% Thoroughbred blood. Takinou’s dam is Anglo Arab and from a breeding program aimed squarely at producing eventers. We asked Alain James, an international judge, and a supporter of the Anglo-Arab breed, to discuss Anglo-Arabs in Eventing. Alain is the president of the Anglo-Arab association:

Do you think Anglo-Arabians will become more popular for modern eventing?

“A lot of Anglo-Arabians have been very good in eventing for fifty years. Even back in 1948 at the London Games, the gold medal was won by Aiglonne.”

Gold at the London Games – Aiglonne

In Mexico, the winner was Pitou – for many years the Anglo-Arab has been produced for eventing. Now let’s have a horse adapted for the new eventing fashion, with paces – I think the new format is good for the Anglo-Arabian, more efforts with less distance. We need horses with good technique, good blood and a good mind. The Section 3, like Upsilon, or Takinou, are perfectly adapted for the new format. We see more and more foreign riders, like Michael Jung, coming to buy our horses.”

The official Press Release tells us: The fastest male event rider in the world, Chris Burton (AUS), didn’t disappoint out on course. Delivering a masterclass in Cross Country riding with an incredible clear inside the time the Australian and Trisha Rickard’s Polystar I finished on 34.8 and in 3rd place and with it taking the Series lead from Laura Collett.

Remember Chris’ cross-country round at Rio:
Christopher Burton’s ride on his nine-year-old dressage-bred horse, Santano, at its first four-star, deserves to become the stuff of legends. Christopher not only mastered the course but did it so elegantly and the Sandro Hit gelding can really gallop, eating the ground in perfect rhythm (perhaps Sandro Hit does have a place in the world of sport horse breeding after all!) Clear – no time.

Here he is with another new star, Polystar, now in the lead on the Event Masters Leaderboard

  1. I had a wonderful Anglo-Arab stallion, Tunes of Glory (37.5%), bred in England, He started eventing as a 6yo and upgraded from Novice to Advanced that first year. He competed in England, Ireland and France and won on the Sunshine Tour in Spain. He completed Saumur three times under three different riders and was reserve horse (non-travelling) for M-J Tumbridge (Bermuda) for the Sydney Olympics. He had a fantastic temperament, covering mares in the stud season in between events during his long career. He retired (sound) at 17 and stood at stud in France until his death in January this year, aged 32 years old. His son, Saturne Champeix, won the 6yo Young Horse Championship at Le Lyon d’Angers.
